What’s Really the Best NYC Observatory View?

We all know by now that New York City has one of the most iconic skylines in the world.

While you can go to Brooklyn, Queens or Jersey and get a great view of Manhattan, what better way to get an upfront look at it than being in the clouds with the other skyscrapers?

We take a look at three of the premier NYC observatories and crown a winner:

3. One World Observatory

Highlights

  • Height: 1,776 feet
  • Statue of Liberty
  • Empire State Building
  • Chrysler Building
  • Inside

Starting off this short list is the high-up One World Observatory (OWO). The youngest out of the three, OWO is located 1,776 feet high in the Freedom Tower which makes it the tallest in the group.

Icons like the Statue of Liberty and Empire State Building are visible from this observatory which makes it one of the most unique views not only in New York City, but in the world.

However, the lack of cohesiveness you feel with a city behind a glass as opposed to out in the open keeps us from ranking One World Observatory higher.

2. Empire State Building Observation Deck

Highlights

  • Height: 1,250 feet
  • Freedom Tower
  • Chrysler Building
  • Flatiron Building
  • Inside/Outside

Second on our list is the highest open-air observatory in New York, the Empire State Building Observation Deck. Yes, you can step foot at the top of the building that King Kong climbed too, you’ll just skip the whole scaling the side of a 1,250-foot building thing and arrive via elevator.

While viewing the Freedom Tower and Chrysler Building without a window is great, the Empire State Building is the most recognizable building in Manhattan, so shouldn’t you want to see it from an observatory deck?

1. Top of the Rock Observation Deck

Highlights

  • Height: 850 feet
  • Empire State Building
  • Freedom Tower
  • Chrysler Building
  • Central Park
  • Inside/Outside

Our favorite observatory in all of New York City, the Top of the Rock Observatory Deck is truly the best. You’re 850 feet in the sky without a window looking at some of the greatest buildings in the world.

Look north for Central Park, east for the Chrysler Building and south for the Empire State Building & Freedom Tower.

We’ll sacrifice the couple hundred feet of altitude in favor of getting to see the best buildings from the clouds any day of the week.
